Visiting the Capitol means engaging directly with policymakers to share insights, represent your community, and influence decisions that impact programs, families, and education. Advocacy is the act of speaking up, providing expertise, and ensuring your voice is heard in shaping policies that create positive change. Being invited to the Capitol reflects recognition of your experience, credibility, and the value of your perspective.

At the Capitol: Advocating for Education and Representation
Where Expertise Meets Policy Change
Visiting the Capitol as a Black woman in education was an empowering and unforgettable experience. I had the privilege of meeting one-on-one with several senators, discussing policies, House bills, amendments, and programs that directly affect students, families, and educational organizations. Preparation was key I spent months reviewing impact reports, studying legislation, and preparing talking points so I could advocate confidently and effectively.
Throughout the day, people kept telling me I “look like I belong,” which was both affirming and inspiring. It reminded me that representation matters seeing a Black woman in those halls advocating for education and workforce development is not just symbolic; it changes perceptions and opens doors for others.
This experience reinforced several important lessons for anyone looking to make a difference in policy:
Preparation is everything. Knowing the bills, amendments, and potential impacts allows you to speak with authority.
Confidence comes from expertise. Your voice carries more weight when you’ve done the research and understand the issues.
Representation matters. Showing up authentically and visibly changes the narrative and inspires others to follow.
Advocacy isn’t just about showing up it’s about being informed, intentional, and personal. My Capitol visit reminded me that we each have the power to influence policy and create positive change, especially when we combine knowledge, preparation, and authentic leadership.
